Frequently Asked Questions

Apothecary is a hidden cocktail lounge and prohibition-era speakeasy in Ottawa's ByWard Market, tucked into the cellar beneath Starling at 54 York Street. Expect craft cocktails, oysters and small plates, low candlelight and live jazz — a moody little apothecary dispensing remedies for the common night.
-
No secret handshake required. Find us below Starling at 54 York Street, come down the stairs, and our staff will take it from there. Walk-ins are welcome, but for weekends and larger groups a reservation is the wiser prescription.
-
Both remedies are valid. We happily take walk-ins, but Apothecary is intimate and fills quickly — especially on Thursday jazz nights and weekends — so we recommend reserving ahead through our Reservations page.
-
We're open Sunday through Thursday from 6 p.m. to midnight, and Friday and Saturday from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. The kitchen serves until 11 p.m. every night.
-
Happy hour runs late here — Sunday through Thursday, 10 p.m. to midnight — with half-price martinis, select wines and draught specials.
-
Yes — live jazz every Thursday from 7 p.m. until late. We also host bingo night, “The Alchemist's Draw,” on Wednesdays from 7 to 10 p.m.
-
Both. Alongside the cocktails we serve modern Canadian small plates, oysters and mains — champagne fries, bang bang shrimp and crème brûlée are guest favourites. The kitchen is open until 11 p.m.
-
Yes. Our hidden back room — the “secret room” — seats up to 18 guests and is a favourite for birthdays, bachelorettes, celebrations and private gatherings. Send an enquiry through our Private Events page or email info@apothecarylounge.ca and our events team will help you plan it.
-
Always. Our “Placebos” menu of thoughtfully made mocktails — the Abigail is a guest favourite — means everyone leaves with a remedy in hand, spirit-free or otherwise. We also have non alcoholic beer and negroni.
-
A little honesty, since the room is part of the charm: Apothecary lives in a cellar reached by stairs, and the lighting is intentionally low and moody. It's atmospheric by design, but worth knowing if stairs or dim light are a concern for your party — call us at 613-421-0820 and we'll do our best to accommodate.
-
Apothecary is a licensed cocktail lounge, so all guests should be of legal drinking age in Ontario (19+).
-
There's no strict dress code — come as you are. That said, many guests enjoy dressing the part for a night in a 1920s-style speakeasy.
-
We do. Apothecary gift cards can be purchased through our site and are also redeemable next door at Starling. Here is the link: https://www.apothecarylounge.ca/gift-cards
